tCd duplication and laws

There are a number of reasons why CD duplication is the most popular way to copy CDs other than the fact that it is easy to do and not too expensive. In addition, the quality of the data on the CD is not affected by the number of copies that are being made. The basics of CD duplication are simply the copying of one CD to another blank CD. The CD being copied may be one that was purchased from the local music store or another CD from another person. The CD can contain any amount of information from pictures, movies, data files, to a wide range of music files. CD duplication is simple and easy to use. It can be one CD burner in a home computer to CD duplicate a few discs, or as complex as a CD duplication machine which requires a skilled operator.

Despite all of the advantages, however, it can also be a controversial issue with all the legal issues concerning copyrights, which someone would need to be aware of when CD duplicating. The laws and regulations are complex and will vary from country to country and state to state, so it is ultimately up to the individual to find out what the restrictions are for the particular location. If someone happens to be using CD duplication for their own use from their computer or from CD's which belong to them, then the CD duplication is considered a backup or fair use. However, if someone needs to make multiple copies of a commercial CD for distribution to friends or more importantly for sale to the general public then they must make sure that they have the copyright permission to do so.

In order to do the CD duplication process correctly, the person will need special CD duplication software. There are those whose computers have a CD-RW drive, and will most likely find that their computer already has some basic software installed for writing CD's. If someone has an external CD-RW drive, they will also need software to accomplish CD duplication.

Most software is 'general purpose' in that it will allow someone to duplicate many different types of files. However, with that type of software there is usually a level of compromise in terms of editing features available and quality of the CD duplicated material. If someone is only interested in copying music files, then they might wish to purchase software which will give lots of useful editing features and provide a better quality of duplicated content.

The same applies to blank CD's - some are more suitable for data files and others for music. It is recommended that someone choose their software and blank CD's carefully and seek advice if they are not sure.

Beyond basic home based CD duplication, if someone is a serious hobbyist or into CD duplication for commercial reasons, then they may wish to consider some of the more specialized equipment and software available.
